The first trip with a baby is often a real adventure, full of joy and... logistical challenges. Packing a suitcase for a little one can make even the most organized parents dizzy. What's worth taking "just in case," and what can you safely give up?

How to plan packing for a trip with a baby?

Approach the matter calmly and start by making a list of necessary items. Consider:

  • where you are going,
  • for how long,
  • what the accommodation conditions will be,
  • whether there will be access to a washing machine, bathtub, kitchen on site,
  • and also – how you are traveling.

Start this a few days before your trip, so you can update it as you go.

What to pack for a trip with a baby? Must-have list

How many items to take? Adjust the number of baby clothes to the number of days you will spend on the trip – pack two sets per day. Also, stock up on cosmetics and medications with a slight surplus if shop availability will be limited on site. If you are in a big city, you can take fewer items and buy them on site.

If you are traveling abroad, it is worth checking local prices online and estimating whether it is worthwhile to bring everything from home or perhaps buy some items on site. In addition, if a washing machine will be available on site, you can take fewer clothes and stock up on everyday laundry detergents.

Baby clothes and textiles

Take baby clothes suitable for the weather and your trip plans. Opt for universal baby bodysuits, sleepsuits, and onesies that are easy to put on and take off. You will also need socks, a thin and a thicker hat, a neck scarf, and a warmer sweater or sweatshirt, because even in summer, nights can be cool. If the child is already walking, pack shoes. Adjust the rest of the clothes to the season and climate of your destination. In addition, a few bibs and 3-4 terry cloth diapers, which with a small child, as you probably know, serve dozens of different functions.

Cosmetics and hygiene products

It's worth opting for minimalism here. You can't forget wet wipes and protective cream (e.g., for diaper rash, but also sunscreen). A gentle wash gel and lotion may also be useful. In addition, a supply of disposable diapers and bags for used diapers. If you will be entering the water, swim diapers will also be necessary!

Feeding accessories

If you use them, pack baby accessories: bottles, pacifiers, a brush for washing them, and a container for powdered milk, as well as a breast pump (with bags or containers for milk). A thermos for hot water might also come in handy. Pack porridges and jars, as well as a bowl and spoon if your little one eats solid food.

Sleep and rest

Children's sleep can be more restless during travel, so it's worth ensuring familiar conditions. Take with you a blanket, swaddle, or sleeping bag that your little one uses daily. A favorite toy, cuddly toy, or music box often works better than lullabies – they will surely have a soothing and calming effect.

Baby's first-aid kit

It's better to have it and not use it than to need it and not have it. If the child takes any medications regularly, pack them first. The first-aid kit should include: a thermometer, saline solution, nasal aspirator, irritation cream, fever reducer, and something for teething (if you are in that stage).

Baby accessories useful for travel

During travel, comfort is key – both yours and your little one's. A diaper bag and an organizer to hang on the seat will be useful in the car or train. Also consider sunshades for the window. It's also good to have accessories on hand to keep your child occupied:

Pack so that you always have wet wipes and terry cloth diapers at hand. Don't forget your child's documents, especially when traveling abroad. Remember to also purchase travel insurance. It's worth putting a wristband on your child's hand with the parents' contact details.

What does a baby need at the destination?

For daily care, a travel bathtub or a foldable basin and a hooded towel will be useful. It's also worth taking care of a play area – an educational mat, a few favorite toys, and sensory books will help your little one get used to the new environment – they will keep him occupied for longer periods, and you will be able to rest.

Smart tips for traveling with a baby – don't be surprised!

Packing in advance is essential. It's best to write down a list a few days earlier and update it as you go. Throw into your carry-on bag what might be needed at any moment, e.g., diapers, wipes, a bottle, a change of clothes. And most importantly: don't stress if you forget something. Most things can be bought on site, and a good mood is the basis of a successful trip!
